.In a swift response to a viral video, the Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, in collaboration with the Ekiti State Waste Management Authority (EKSWMA) enforcement team, has apprehended a suspect caught discharging liquid waste with an offensive odor into a stream in the Basiri area of Ado-Ekiti.
According to Chief Mrs. Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, the State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, the suspect claimed he was discharging dirty water, not sewage, during interrogation. However, samples from the affected site have been taken for chemical analysis to determine the microbiological materials contained in the liquid discharged.
The Commissioner assured that the ongoing investigations would be thorough and concluded to prevent future occurrences and maintain a cleaner, safer environment in Ekiti State. She reiterated the state government’s zero tolerance for illegal waste handling and disposal, stressing that all offenders would be prosecuted according to the law.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any acts of environmental violation to the appropriate authorities. The state government is committed to protecting the environment and public health, and will take all necessary measures to ensure that those who jeopardize the safety of lives are held accountable.
