The Enugu Air aircraft that crash-landed in Benin has been written off and permanently withdrawn from service after suffering irreparable damage.
Despite generating ₦29.6bn in 9-months, documents shows zero spending on maintenance, according to Enugu State budget documents, as revealed in an investigation by Sahara Reporters.
Recall, we reported that this aircraft model, the Embraer ERJ-170LR, is no longer in production and was acquired from EgyptAir via Egypt’s CIAF Leasing, and repainted in Johannesburg.
The Brazilian manufacturer, Embraer delivered the aircraft to EgyptAir Express in March 2009.
In 2019, it was transferred to EgyptAir and withdrawn from service and stored in Cairo from 2020 to 2025, when it was acquired by the Enugu State Government, put under operation of XE Jets until March 2026.
Nine months later, it has now been permanently withdrawn from service, after suffering structural damage, leaving Enugu Air with a reported 5 aircraft. (1 E170, 1 E190, 3 E195), we couldn’t confirm the operational status of all.
