BETWEEN OBASANJO AND BEKO
One of the villains of June 12 is Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. He it was that actually suggested the illegal Interim Ational government which was headed by Chief Earnest Shonekan after he said Abiola was not the messiah we were waiting for. But unknown to him, he was riding a tiger. When Abacha came in, he roped him into a phantom coup and he was initially sentenced to life imprisonment but later reduced to 15 years AFTER much advocacy. Lesson:Dont support an evil action out of personal prejudice.
… Obasanjo and the Ransome-Kuti families were never in good times, particularly since the burning of Kalakuta Republic of Fela. Fela and Beko detested Obasanjo. However, when Obasanjo was undergoing trial at the military tribunal over the 1995 phantom coup plot, Beko did not allow his personal issues with Obasanjo to becloud his aversion against injustice, even when his traducer was the victim. Beko managed to discreetly obtain the tribunal judgment and faxed it to some Western countries, as part of the advocacy to free Obasanjo and other alleged coupists. This fax was intercepted by the security agents and Beko was arrested, tried as an accessory after the fact of treason and given life imprisonment.
The difference between OBJ and Beko was that, while OBJ, out of personal animosity against Abiola, was opposed to June 12 from being revalidated, Beko rose above his personal issues against OBJ and staked his life for him because of the injustices being meted to OBJ. That is the stuff great men are made of.
