Opposition leaders including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, and ex-Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi are expected to unveil a new political platform before June 30. The move, aimed at challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections, is gaining momentum as coalition talks progress.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Katsina, former APC governorship candidate and ex-Secretary to the State Government, Mustapha Inuwa, confirmed that discussions are nearing conclusion. “We need a reliable, trusted platform to beat this government and by the grace of God, by the end of this month, the leadership will conclude on which platform to use,” he said.
Inuwa emphasized that the coalition, led by Atiku, Obi, El-Rufai, and Amaechi, is forming in Nigeria’s best interest. “We want to move forward in all aspects of human development as a nation,” he noted. He criticized the current leadership, arguing that Nigeria has lost touch with other African countries and lacks effective governance despite its status as the so-called giant of Africa.
He also expressed concern over recent defections to the APC, warning that those making the switch are “leaving the frying pan to the fire.” According to him, the APC is plagued by the same internal issues that once affected the PDP, particularly during party congresses. Citing the example of recent local government elections in Katsina, he alleged that only government-favoured candidates were allowed to contest.
Inuwa called on supporters to remain steadfast and continue praying for the success of the coalition. “Our major concern is the electorate because they are the ones to decide, and they are with us and we are with them,” he concluded.
