The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called upon Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) and the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to postpone their scheduled events on May 30th, 2024. This date, recognized as Biafra Heroes Day, holds significant importance for the Igbo community.
The appeal was directed at UNIZIK’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Charles Esimone, and the WAEC board, emphasizing the importance of honoring Biafra Heroes Day, a day set aside to remember those who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970. IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, conveyed the message, stressing that no public events should be held on this day in Biafra land.
Powerful stated, “May 30th is a sacred day for all Biafrans, a time to honor our fallen heroes and heroines. We urge the Vice Chancellor of UNIZIK and the WAEC board to reschedule their events out of respect for this important day.”
IPOB has made it clear that May 30th is observed as a public holiday in Biafra land, with a sit-at-home order that includes the closure of markets, schools, banks, and offices. Movement is restricted except for essential services such as journalism, healthcare, and emergency services.
The statement also warned against endangering lives, particularly those of students scheduled to take WAEC exams on that day. “The safety of individuals is paramount. We caution against holding any events that could place lives at risk during this period of remembrance,” Powerful added.
IPOB emphasized that while it will not enforce the sit-at-home order, it will not be held responsible for any consequences faced by those who ignore the directive. The organization urged caution among students, parents, and visitors to the university, highlighting past incidents where clashes have occurred during sit-at-home orders.
The group concluded with a stern warning to those who might attempt to undermine the significance of Biafra Heroes Day, stating that any actions against the memory of Biafran heroes would not be tolerated.
