
Ekiti government expresses commitment to tackling Human Trafficking
Ekiti State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Olawale
Fapohunda has assured the people of the state that the current
leadership of the State will tackle the menace of human trafficking
which, according to him has become an emerging scourge and major
concern to the State.
The Attorney-General made this assurance while attending the State
chapter of the 2019 Annual Law Week of the Federation of International
Women Lawyers (FIDA) which was held at the Afe Babalola Bar Centre,
High Court Complex in Ado-Ekiti.
Justice Fapohunda while delivering his speech on “Human Trafficking: A
Menace to the Social Economic Development of Our Society” said his
Ministry has prioritized a three-pronged approach of the Law; Judicial
institutions; and strategic partnership with relevant government and
non-governmental organizations in fighting the menace.
“As it is the desire of the current Fayemi-led administration in the
State to enact laws that would steadily respond to emerging crimes in
the state including human trafficking” he submitted.
The Commissioner for Justice also mentioned the ongoing review of the
Laws of Ekiti State which includes revisiting key provisions of the
Ekiti State Criminal Code Law, emphasizing that it is the desire of
the Fayemi Administration to enact Laws that respond to emerging
crimes in the State including human trafficking.
The Wife of the Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi who was the Keynote
Speaker at the event, in her remarks spoke of the need for all hands
to be on deck to combat the human trafficking menace in the society.
While enumerating some of the achievements of the State in various
areas, Erelu Bisi Fayemi noted that Ekiti State is the first State in
the Country to open a Sex Offenders Register which was an initiative
of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Olawale
Fapohunda in his first term in Office.
The FIDA week is a week long program which is to span 17th -23rd of
June 2019 with the theme, Human Trafficking: A Menace To
Socio-Economic Development of the Society and was declared open by the
Chief Judge of the State, Justice Ayodeji Daramola.
The opening ceremony was graced by the Wife of the State Governor,
Erelu Bisi Fayemi, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice,
Olawale Fapohunda, Commissioner for Women Affairs, Moji Fafure and
many other big wigs in the legal profession from within and outside
the State.
FIDA is a non-governmental, non-profit making Organization made up of
female Lawyers and is saddled with the responsibility of protecting,
promoting and preserving the rights and interests of Women and
Children.
