
The Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ekiti State, Olawale Fapohunda and his team from the Ministry of Justice received the First Lady of Ekiti State, Erelu Bisi Fayemi and the Ekiti State Gender Based Violence Management Committee, on an advocacy visit yesterday, 27th, February at the Ministry of Justice, Academy, Secretariat Road, Ado Ekiti.
Erelu Bisi Fayemi, while speaking said the purpose of the Gender Based Violence Committee advocacy visit was to make the following requests:
- That the Ministry of Justice gazettes the Gender Based Violence Law to enable wider access specifically within the Magistrate Courts and the High Courts
- To support the simplification of the Gender Based Violence Law to ensure easy understanding by all in Ekiti State; and
- Intensify efforts to name and shame convicted Sex offenders.
Olawale Fapohunda while Responding, appreciated the First Lady for her support in ensuring that Gender Based Violence is eradicated.
Fapohunda lamented the high rate of Sexual Violence in the State. According to him, prosecution alone, may not end sexual violence. There is need for public campaign and enlightment.
The Honourable Commissioner for Justice in Ekiti State also affirmed that the State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has approved the translation of the Gender Based Violence Law and some other laws into Yoruba Language.
While Speaking on the issue of incessant rape by teachers of some Secondary Schools, Olawale Fapohunda said all Principals of Secondary Schools need to caution their teachers to avoid being vicariously liable for the act and omissions committed by these teachers.
The Permanent Secretary and Solicitor General of the Ministry of Justice, Mr Lawrence Ojo who gave the vote of thanks commended the first lady for her love and Support to the Ministry of Justice.
The Meeting was attendend by members of the Gender Based Violence Management Committee and Some Senior Staff of the Ministry of Justice.
