Thursday, I secured the conviction of an 18 year old boy for the rape of a 7 year old girl. The offence was committed when he was 17. The Judgment left me pensive, not entirely certain about how I feel. Whichever way I look at it, it is a tragedy all round.
The violent rape of a child, who will probably remain scarred for life, and the consequences on another child who will spend much of the productive part of his life in prison. A wasted life!
@ekitistategov we have done a lot in our determination to respond aggressively to sexual violence. Mr Governor and Wife of the Governor have both provided sterling and priceless leadership to the campaign against sexual violence.
Strong political will, progressive laws and policies, effective and relentless prosecution, multi sectoral public awareness campaign are our important intervention areas. The number of minors who commit sexual offenses has grown in recent months.
We now need to have a focused conversation on minors and sexual violence. How do we deal with juveniles who commit sex offenses against other children?
