
As part of its efforts to forestall flood disaster and provide a more
conducive environment in the State, Ekiti State Government has
disclosed that it is collaborating with the World Bank to construct
concrete channelization in 126 locations across the 3 Senatorial
Districts.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources Hon. Gbenga
Agbeyo, gave the information while featuring on a Television Programme
in Ado-Ekiti.
Hon. Agbeyo explained that the project, which according to him would
gulp 29 billion naira, became imperative to salvage the people of the
state from effects of flood.
as government had gone round the communities and mapped out the affected areas.
The Commissioner, who stressed the commitment of the present
administration to the wellbeing of the people, said government had
cleared drainages in 30 areas in Ado-Ekiti Metropolis, to give away
for free flow of water and prevent flood.
He charged the people to complement the government efforts by
desisting from indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
Speaking on penalties against environmental laws, the Commissioner
said that Ekiti State Environmental Laws have become moribund and is
being forwarded to the Ministry of Justice for proper review.
Reacting to the issue of people displaying their wares by the road
side at Adebayo area of the state capital, Hon. Agbeyo said the
Ministry had met with the leadership of market women and directed them
to leave the place to avert road accident.
While responding to questions on open defecation, he advised people to
build toilets in their houses and abstain from defecating in open
places, adding that Environmental Officers would be going round to
ensure compliance.
He appealed to the people to develop right attitude to cleaning their
environments to enjoy a healthy life.
