
Erelu Fayemi condemns discriminating punishment for pregnant school girl
The wife of Ekiti State Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi has condemned the
discriminating act of expelling pregnant girls from school while the
boys that impregnate them are allowed to continue their education.
Speaking in Ado-Ekiti during a meeting with wives of Coordinating
Directors and Community Development Officers of Local Government
Council’s, Erelu Fayemi stressed that all girls have right to
education regardless of their pregnancy, marital or motherhood status.
According to her, pregnant girls face all kinds of punishments
including discriminating practices that deny them their right to
education.
Noting the international legal obligation of all governments to
provide all children with education without discrimination, Mrs.
Fayemi warned that all relevant laws including the Child Right Law,
Gender Equality Law and other applicable laws would be judiciously
implemented by the present administration to protect the interest of
children.
She said that a sensitization campaign would hold in state in August
to increase the awareness of the people on the importance of
protecting the rights of children, particularly the girl child.
The Governor’s wife who also emphasized that no stone would be left
unturned in efforts to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in
the state, noted that there is no spiritual or cultural reason for the
dastardly act under the guise of circumcision or any other excuse.
In her remarks, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Chief (Mrs.)
Moji Fafure solicited the support of women in the state for the
Fayemi-led administration, stressing the importance of collective
responsibility to the success of the inclusive governance of the
present administration in the state.
Chief Fafure who noted the present government’s passion for a rapid
development of the state however stressed the need for support of all
stakeholders to achieve the desired goal.
