
Speaking in Ado-Ekiti during the flag-off ceremony of the Migrant e-Registration Programme at Nigeria Immigration Service, Dr. Fayemi stressed that security of lives and property is a collective reponsibility that should not be left in the hands of security agencies alone.
The Governor who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Abiodun Oyebanji described the exercise as an Identity Management Mechanism needed for adequate safety and security of a country and its citizens.
He noted that effective identity management will help checkmate illegal migration and also facilitate legitimate movement of migrants thereby securing the entire nation from foreigners with ulterior motives.
Stating that the exercise is key to national security and socio-economic development, he affirmed that accurate record of the citizens and migrants will enhance effective planning and management of the nation’s resources for the betterment of the populace.
Fayemi expressed joy that Ekiti has joined league of states that have commenced the programme.
In her welcome address, the Comptroller of Immigration, Ekiti State Command, Mrs. Ifeoma Benedicta Dibia said the Migrant e-Registration programme is meant for all non-citizens of Nigeria (including ECOWAS citizens) who have been resident or intends to stay in the country for a period exceeding 90 days in accordance with regulation 24(1)(a) of Immigration Regulation 2017.
She noted that the exercise will be continuous, adding that an amnesty period of six months that will lapse early next year was given all migrants to get registered.
