Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has ruled out any intention to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), even as he warned that the party is facing a severe internal crisis that could lead to its collapse if not urgently addressed. Fayose made this known on Monday while speaking with journalists after a private visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at his residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Despite the growing wave of defections from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Fayose insisted he remains committed to the party and has no plans to switch allegiance. “Let me first of all clear this: I, Fayose, will not move from PDP to any political party, not even APC. I am 65 years old this year. It is within the choices of those who have chosen to move,” he said.
He acknowledged that the PDP is in a troubled state, describing the situation as dire. “Without doubt, the PDP is in trouble. That is the gospel truth. If they don’t quickly take steps, the party will become a carcass,” he warned.
Fayose noted that while he no longer plays a leading role in the PDP, having served his term as governor, he has made his contributions to the party’s development. “I am not on the front line anymore. I am no longer the governor of a state. The little contribution I can make, I made it while I was on the seat,” he said.
Commenting on his meeting with President Tinubu, Fayose said the visit was personal and intended to show support for the President’s efforts to stabilise the country. He praised some of the President’s early policy decisions, noting that while the challenges are significant, progress takes time.
“No one is saying it is easy, but there is no miracle that can turn things around overnight. For the little the President has done, we must commend him,” he said.
He also acknowledged his long-standing belief in Tinubu’s leadership, stating that his support for the President predates the 2023 election. “Even while I was in office as a PDP governor, I’ve always believed in his leadership. And I did not hide my support for him even before he became the President,” Fayose added.
Fayose concluded by calling on Nigerians and political leaders to encourage the President as he takes on the task of economic reform and national development. He emphasised that stabilising the economy and currency remains critical, and commended the President’s bold steps so far, expressing hope for a better future.
