Gambia politics…Darboe: UDP will not be obstacle to gov’t
The secretary general and leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Ousainou Darboe, has stated that his party will not serve as obstacle to the development initiatives of the government despite his party forming majority in the National Assembly
“Whoever said UDP is an opposition, the person doesn’t know what he is saying or knows nothing about politics,” he said. “If UDP want, we will block any measures taken by the government. However, we will not do it because the government is our government and if you see that we fought for the past years, it’s to ensure that the country is developed,” he said.
Darboe was speaking over the weekend at Basse, Upper River Region, during a political rally attended by thousands of UDP supporters. “If the government brought anything that is geared towards national development, UDP will not block it. We will promote and push it, he said.”
Since 1996, Mr. Darboe said, their interest has always been for the development of the country and that they will die in that struggle. “Whoever says that we don’t want Gambia’s development, that is not true. The National Development Plan (NDP) that they are singing both day and night is UDP because it was prepared by the former Minister of Finance Amadou Sanneh, who used to work until 12 a.m. just for preparing the NDP.”
