I am Not Politically Correct and I am Not a Big Fan of Woke
To be quite honest, I’m still not sure what “woke” means. When it comes to transgender issues, I get very confused. I do not understand why the Biden administration, which has so many domestic problems, prioritizes gay rights in Africa. My Nigerian driver asked me why Biden is always telling Nigerians and Africans to accept gay people. He said, “Can’t he see that we are already happy?” You see what I mean? To my driver, “gay” still has the same old-fashioned meaning as it did twenty years ago.
The most prominent transgender person in Nigeria, Bobrisky, was recently jailed for currency violations, but everyone knows it’s because he’s a man wearing women’s clothes and bleaches his skin. In Nigerian and African culture, what Bobrisky represents is unacceptable. However, many legislators who pass anti-LGBTQ laws are the biggest hypocrites in Nigeria, engaging in secret homosexual relationships. Everyone in Nigeria knows that Bobrisky has many powerful, rich politicians as his lovers, and if he speaks out, many men pretending to be straight will be exposed as homosexuals in a country where laws against homosexuality date back to British rule. So, they threw him in prison to keep his mouth shut.
Is the term “politically correct” understood by Nigerians? I don’t think so. There was a debate on what to call Meghan Markle—do we call her “half caste” or something more up-to-date like “biracial” or “mixed”? These are not everyday subjects of debate in a country of 230 million people. I got blasted by Meghan fans for using “half caste” the other day, but that is what the majority of people in Nigeria say. “Biracial” is a new word, a modern term, just like LGBTQ, which I only know about from what comedian Dave Chappelle says about it.
We are a laid-back, happy people. We only want steady electricity, running water, roads without bottomless potholes, and leaders who will not steal all our oil money. Nigerians want to feed their children, buy books, do business, and make money—not worry about terminologies that are popular in San Francisco but have no meaning in Lagos, Port Harcourt, or Kano. Give us twenty-four-hour electricity and we will be gay or happy. I rest my case.
Oga they don bring back lights . Ok turn the generator off . Ha !
