Operations Unit of Ekiti State Peace Corps while on a routine field operation yesterday led by State Commandant, Hon. Dele Owoju, apprehended 200 Kilograms of Cannabis Sativa (also known as Indian hemp) worth millions of Naira from syndicates who cultivates the banned substance around Omuo and Isinbode areas of the state.
According to the Commandant, the information about the Cannabis plantation in the aforementioned areas reached the Operations Team via intelligence report. Suspected syndicates who were transporting the illegal goods absconded at the sight of the security agency, leaving the goods behind.
“We have been trailing the information reaching us about the operations of the syndicates for over a month now and through our intelligence gathering, we discovered the location we are likely to intercept the contraband which worked according to perfectly with our and research,” he said.
Today, the Special Adviser Security, Rtd. Brg. Gen. Ebenezer Ogundana accompanied members of the Peace Corps to handover the consignment to officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ado-Ekiti for further investigation and prosecution of culpable persons.
The Special Adviser noted that Ekiti Peace Corps, amongst other state security agencies, have successfully built cordial working relationships with top security agencies as well as members of rural communities across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state.
He also acknowledged the visionary leadership of Governor Kayode Fayemi on his clamour for effective Community Policing, adding that the effort of the government on the security of lives and properties is evident in the services of the Peace Corps at the grassroots.
The Deputy State Commander (Operations & Intelligence) of NDLEA, Ofila Samson accompanied by his officials, received the substance from the envoy of the State Government.
In his statement, Ofila appreciated the efforts of the Ekiti Peace Corps in their bid to bolster the operations of security agencies in the state including the NDLEA, saying that the recovery will further enhance the working relationship between the two agencies.
“We appreciate the effort of Ekiti State Peace Corps and we believe this is only the beginning of the good working relationship that we have. Your presence at the grassroots across the state has helped us in the area of intelligence. I encourage you to continue in the effort to disclose and capture more syndicates in the state,” he said.
