Sokoto State Governor, Ahmad Aliyu, faces widespread criticism following his decision to rename a prominent road after Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu.
The road, formerly known as “Pepsi Road,” was slated for commissioning on June 3 by Katsina State Governor, Umaru Dikko Radda, but the event was postponed. Despite this, a photo of the newly named “Seyi Ahmed Bola Tinubu Road” surfaced on social media on Saturday, sparking heated debates and dissatisfaction among residents.
Many locals questioned the rationale behind honoring Seyi Tinubu, who they argue has no significant contributions to either Sokoto or Nigeria. “The governor overlooked many deserving Sokoto indigenes and instead chose the president’s son, who has no ties to Sokoto or the northern region,” resident Salisu Ahmadu said
Social media platforms buzzed with criticism. One user, @UncleAnass, lamented, “This is how @Ahmedaliyuskt is denigrating the name of Sokoto with his lack of capacity and sheepishness. Imagine naming a road after Seyi Tinubu. Not even the Tinubu self. Mtschew. This is so denigrating. This is really pathetic. Allah ya isa.”
Another user, @Heinz_Gunner, commented, “Road to North Korea. This is how it begins!!,” while @jnraib2 added, “Even Lagos didn’t name a road after Seyi Tinubu, but Sokoto governor must impress Tinubu.” @AsIngawa001 remarked, “Seyi Tinubu road in Sokoto State stands as a testament to Nigeria’s practice of celebrating individuals with little or no contribution to the country’s progress.”
Despite the uproar, Governor Aliyu’s spokesperson, Abubakar Bawa, was not available for comments.
While Seyi Tinubu does not hold an official position in his father’s administration, his influence within the APC is notable, having accompanied President Tinubu on various foreign trips. However, he was barred from attending a Federal Executive Council meeting a few months ago.
The controversy continues as the rescheduled date for the road’s commissioning remains unannounced.
