In a tragic incident that has sparked outrage, Miss Ocheze Ogbonna, a crane operator at Inner Galaxy Steel Company in Umuahala-Obuzor, Abia State, was allegedly murdered by a Chinese expatriate. The expatriate, identified as Mr. Power, reportedly pushed Ogbonna to her death after she rejected his romantic advances.
Chris Nkwonta, the representative for Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and condemned the alleged actions of the expatriate. Nkwonta described the act as a “wicked” and “barbaric” assault on his constituent, calling it a gross abuse of the rules of engagement and a total disregard for human life.
“Miss Ocheze Ogbonna’s death orchestrated by a Chinese expatriate is a gross abuse of the rules of engagement and a total disregard for the sanctity of human life and an affront on their host community, Umuahala-Obuzor, and the peace-loving people of Ukwa West Local Government Area,” Nkwonta stated.
Nkwonta’s statement emphasized the peaceful nature of his constituency and demanded justice for Ogbonna. He highlighted concerns over the behavior of some Chinese expatriates in Nigeria, urging immediate action to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety and dignity of Nigerian workers.
Nkwonta called on high-ranking officials, including the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, and the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, to ensure that the alleged perpetrator is apprehended and faces legal consequences. He also appealed to the Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to join in seeking justice.
