In 2022, the current Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Iormem Alia was suspended from his priestly duties by the Catholic Diocese of Gboko over his involvement in partisan politics.@harreceipts posted the letter on his X handle, titled “Suspension of Revd. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia from Sacred Ministry”, signed by Bishop William A. Avenya, revealing the circumstances that led to the suspension. The letter, issued from the Chancery in Gboko, noted that Fr. Alia had been previously admonished multiple times in accordance with Canon Law (Ex can. 1371, 2° CIC) but chose to proceed with his political ambitions.

The Catholic Church strictly forbids clergy from active participation in partisan politics. However, Fr. Alia defied this directive by purchasing nomination forms to contest for the governorship of Benue State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In response, Bishop Avenya announced his suspension from the exercise of sacred ministry, stating that it was necessary to “respond to the spiritual and pastoral needs of the Church” in the Diocese.
The suspension, according to the Bishop, took effect immediately upon communication and would remain until Alia ceased his political activities.Despite the suspension, Alia went on to secure the APC ticket and later won the 2023 gubernatorial election in Benue State. The Catholic Diocese, while maintaining its stance on political neutrality among its clergy, wished him well, assuring him of continued prayers even as he embarked on his new path in public service.
Despite his suspension, Alia continues to wear his clerical collar, offending the sensibilities of many fellow priests who knew of his suspension. Alia has said he plans to return to the ministry after his public service concludes.
