In a bid to reconcile the ongoing feud between Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, the Senate convened a closed-door session on Wednesday, July 3. The session was called to address a matter of ‘privilege’ raised by Senator Kingibe, amidst escalating tensions between the two public figures.
The rift between Wike and Kingibe had escalated into a public exchange of criticisms recently. On July 1, Minister Wike had issued a stern warning, suggesting potential political consequences for Senator Kingibe’s future electoral ambitions as long as he retained his ministerial position. In response, Senator Kingibe publicly lamented being sidelined in the administration of FCT affairs by Minister Wike.
Prior to the Senate’s recess, Senator Kingibe had raised concerns over the exclusion of her input in the 2024 budget deliberations for FCT, prompting the Senate to consider her matter of privilege upon resumption.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio presided over the session and emphasized the confidentiality of the discussions, stressing the need to resolve the matter swiftly and amicably.
