The first thing that struck me yesterday as the new Pope appeared on TV was his colour. He looked too tanned for a Chicagoan, & a shade darker than the whites surrounding him. I thought perhaps Peru has a lot of sun.Turns out his maternal grandparents are black Haitian.
The new Pope Leo XIV is only the second mathematician to become Pope. He has a BSc in Mathematics from the Augustinian Villanova University in Pennsylvania. Pope Sylvester II (999–1003), the first mathematician Pope was a renowned scholar before becoming pope.
