U.S. President Donald Trump says birthright citizenship was originally for children of American slaves and was never meant for everyone around the world to possess U.S. citizenship.
“Birthright citizenship, if you look back at when this was passed – made – that was meant for the children of slaves,” Mr Trump said. The U.S. president said this when fielding questions on Thursday.
“I just think we’ll end up winning in court, in the Supreme Court. I think we’re going to win that case. I look forward to winning it,” Mr Trump said, referring to his executive order temporarily blocked by U.S. District Judge John Coughenour.
He added, “This was not meant for the whole world to come in and pile into the United States of America. Everybody coming in and totally unqualified people and with perhaps unqualified children. This wasn’t meant for that.”
After Mr Trump signed the executive order ending birthright citizenship,Democratic-led states and civil rights groups filed several lawsuits challenging it.
