Contrary to the report carried by Wazobiareportersng.co and some online media which have gone viral that the accident victims involving a vehicle and the back up vehicle of the Vice Chancellor, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Professor Edward Olanipekun were abandoned; they were indeed not abandoned.
Obviously, the report, from all indications, is mischievous, misleading and calculated at tarnishing the good image of the Vice Chancellor as a person, and Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti as a corporate entity.
The University decided to provide more information in addition to the police report in order to debunk the lies being spread and to give the correct account of what happened on 18th May, 2020.
In the first place, the Vice Chancellor was not driving in a convoy as reported. He had already passed by before the accident occured. Also, the accident was not caused by the back up vehicle. Rather, it occurred owing to the recklessness of the driver (Abdulateef Oluwasegun) of the other vehicle, coming from Ado-Ekiti and heading towards Iworoko-Ekiti) which did not have a functional wiper to ensure visibility during the heavy downpour. In an attempt to avoid a pot hole at the centre of the highway; Abdulateef, who was using his hand to wipe the windshield, suddenly veered off his lane and rammed into the Vice Chancellor’s back up vehicle. The Police had since issued its report which confirmed that the accident was actually caused by the recklessness of Abdulateef Oluwasegun.
To show that none of the victims was abandoned, It is pertinent to note that it was the VC’s aides who rescued all the victims (seven in number) in both crashed vehicles and took them (using University vehicles) to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti (EKSUTH) where they were given prompt medical attention. As a matter of fact, the Vice Chancellor alongside the Principal Officers and other senior Officers of the university were at EKSUTH with the accident victims and did not leave the hospital until sometime around 12 midnight.
The university followed up the treatment of all accident victims and in some occasions, vehicles belonging to the University were used to convey the victims including Abdulateef Oluwasegun to a facility outside EKSUTH for X-ray examination. This is to further confirm that he (Abdulateef) and other victims were not in any way abandoned. It should be noted that if the university had not taken all the steps it took when the accident occurred, perhaps, some fatalities would have been recorded but thanks be to God as no life was lost till date, as a result of the accident.
It is also necessary to state here that one (Adebawore Adegalu “Penco”) of the five (5) people in the Vice Chancellor’s back up vehicle that was involved in the accident is also an alumnus of EKSU and he is still on crutches as he has not been able to walk with his legs since then.
When Ruqayat Mohammed’s father brought a letter seeking financial assistance from the university, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the university advised him to rewrite the letter such that it won’t suggest that the accident was caused by the university vehicle, which he failed to do. Furthermore, Abdulateef Oluwasegun deceived some Human Rights lawyers (who followed him to the Iworoko Police Station), claiming that the accident was caused by the University vehicle. Abdulateef’s false allegation had since been refuted by the Police as clearly stated in its report which is now in public domain.
Ekiti State University, as a corporate organization and in particular under the present administration headed by Prof. Edward Olanipekun (a human rights activist) has been rendering its corporate social responsibility without any form of discrimination and will continue to do so. For instance, it can still be recalled vividly that the University gave financial assistance to its French students that were stranded in Togo and Benin Republic at the outbreak of COVID-19. If Ruqayat’s father (rather than his wild goose chase) had approached the university with a letter properly written without implicating the University, his request could have received a favourable consideration by the EKSU administration.
