A member of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, has disclosed that a total of 62 bills have been passed into law by the legislative arm of the state within the last 26 months it was inaugurated.
Aribasoye, who represents Ikole state constituency II, stated that out of the bills, a total of 53 were sponsored by the executive, while nine belonged to the private category, from which he sponsored four to guarantee good governance at the grassroots.
In tandem with the position canvassed by the Zamfara State Governor, Hon. Bello Mutawalle, Aribasoye called on President Muhammadu Buhari to as a matter of urgency declare a state of emergency in the security sector of the country.
The lawmaker stated this in Ado-Ekiti yesterday while interacting with journalists, where he debunked the claim by opposition that the state Assembly is an appendage of the executive arm.
Speaking on the activities of the Assembly in the last two years, the lawmaker maintained that the fact that the lawmakers have been cooperating with the state Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and passed some bills speedily to guarantee good governance shouldn’t be a basis for them to be branded as stooges.
According to him, “We have passed nine private bills, four of them I personally sponsored and had been passed and assented to by the governor.
“Our productivity shouldn’t be misinterpreted to mean that we are lackeys, not at all! We were elected to cooperate with the executive, and not to fight it, for the benefit of the Ekiti people, and that we shall continue to do.”
Condemning the killing and abduction of the military officers recently, Aribasoye said: “It is time the government declared a state of emergency on security, because every other sector depends largely on it.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker said it was high time the government acted appropriately and in most decisive way, to checkmate the activities of the bandits, whom he described as terrorists.
The lawmaker, who lamented the recent attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), noted that the institution should be treated as a sacred place, and should not be allowed to be desecrated by criminals.
“Personally, I am calling on President Buhari to as a matter of urgency declare a state of emergency on our security sector.
“Something drastic must be done immediately to arrest this ugly situation. The issue here is not the issue of APC or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), because the bandits would not say you are APC or any other political party before attacking you.”
The lawmaker also revealed that he had facilitated the sinking of boreholes and grading of local roads to boost agriculture and transportation in 11 towns under his constituency in the last two years.
