Stakeholders in Ikere-Ekiti have demanded that the Ekiti South Federal Constituency I seat in the House of Representatives be zoned to Ikere LGA ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group alleged that the council area had been denied representation in the green chamber for 23 years despite being part of the constituency alongside Ise/Orun and Ekiti South-West LGAs.
The demand was contained in a communiqué issued after a meeting held with the Supreme Council of Ikere Youths and signed by community leaders including Otunba Sola Adewunmi and Chief Akin Afuye.
Other signatories to the communiqué included Tunde Arifayan, Prof. Florence Osalusi, Dr. Wale Afolabi, Engr. Oludare Olajiga and Barrister Toba Alaba.
The stakeholders described the prolonged absence of an Ikere indigene in the House of Representatives as unfair, insisting that the arrangement contradicted the principles of justice and equitable representation.
“We view this lack of representation as an act of injustice and a violation of our rights as members of the federal constituency,” the communiqué stated.
The group maintained that both Ekiti South-West and Ise/Orun councils had occupied the seat over the years, adding that it was only fair for Ikere to produce the next lawmaker in 2027.
“We call on Governor Biodun Oyebanji and leaders of political parties in the state to ensure that candidates of Ikere extraction emerge for the constituency seat in the forthcoming National Assembly election,” the stakeholders said.
