The Federal Government has commenced the demolition of a section of Landmark Beach in Lagos to pave the way for the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, spearheaded the demolition on Saturday following his inspection of key sections of the proposed highway.
Umahi’s visit to the site included inspections at kilometres 13, 16, and 20 to determine the most efficient route for the coastal highway with minimal disruption. Despite the efforts to mitigate damage, the demolition was inevitable as the beach area was within the federal government’s Right-of-Way.
The minister acknowledged that several structures would be affected by the demolition, but he assured that compensation would be provided to those impacted by the project. “It’s within the right-of-way of the coastal corridor, which is the legitimate right-of-way of the federal government,” Umahi said. He also mentioned that a grace period had been extended twice before the demolition, indicating the government’s attempt to work with stakeholders to reduce impact.
Umahi emphasized the importance of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project for Nigeria’s economic development, dismissing opposition from some quarters. “This project is essential for our infrastructural development and aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.
To allay concerns, Umahi assured that documentation for compensation would start between May 2 and 3, with the minister remaining available throughout the week to address any issues related to the demolition and compensation process.
Bolaji Ariyo, the Chief Executive Officer of Mami Chula Beach Lifestyle, which is also affected by the demolition, acknowledged the project’s necessity for national development despite the inconvenience to a few individuals. This sentiment highlights the broader support for the project despite its localised disruptions.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project is expected to boost connectivity along Nigeria’s coastal region, promoting economic growth and improved infrastructure for the country.
