A fresh crisis is reportedly brewing within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after the party replaced several candidates initially submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano State over an alleged violation of a power-sharing arrangement.
According to a report by Daily Post, the affected candidates were removed following concerns that the original submissions did not reflect an existing agreement between the Kwankwasiyya bloc and the party’s established structure in the state.
A document signed by the Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, stated that the revised list was intended to align with the agreed distribution of party positions and elective tickets between both groups
A document signed by the Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, stated that the revised list was intended to align with the agreed distribution of party positions and elective tickets between both groups.
The document was copied to NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson; Kwankwasiyya leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; and the party’s North-West Zonal Chairman
Under the updated arrangement, the party approved Barrister Isma’il Idris Sani for Kumbotso Federal Constituency, Nasiru Ali Ahmed for Nassarawa, Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id for Kano Municipal, Barrister Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim for Doguwa/Tudun Wada, Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar for Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa, Ibrahim Bashir Bango for Sumaila/Takai, and Abdulmajid Isa
The party also announced changes to State House of Assembly tickets in Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo, and Dawakin Kudu constituencies.
According to the NDC, there was a standing agreement that elective positions and party offices would be shared on a 60-40 basis, with the Kwankwasiyya faction allocated 60 percent and the existing party structure retaining 40 percent.
Sources familiar with the development alleged that Kwankwaso has threatened to withdraw from the party if candidates associated with his faction are replaced in violation of the agreed formula. However, there has been no official statement from the former Kano State governor confirming the claim.
The development highlights growing tensions within the party as preparations for future political contests continue.
