
A mortuary worker identified as Amaobi has been arrested by the Benue State Police Command following an incident in Agwabi, Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State that sparked public concern on Friday.
According to local sources, the suspect, who works at a mortuary in Agwabi, was seen outside the facility carrying a human leg reportedly taken from the morgue. He was alleged to have used the body part as a walking aid while moving to a nearby shop to purchase items.
Residents who witnessed the incident raised an alarm, leading to his interception by local youths before he was handed over to the police.
Police authorities confirmed his arrest and stated that investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and the condition of the mortuary where he is employed.
During initial questioning, Amaobi reportedly claimed the act was intended to draw attention to conditions at the facility. He also alleged that he was seeking support to push for the evacuation of several unidentified bodies said to have been deposited at the morgue following past security operations.
The police have not released further details as inquiries continue.
