Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has remained in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as investigations continue into an alleged ₦432 billion corruption case, Peak Newspaper reports.
Sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed on Tuesday that El-Rufai’s detention was extended to allow investigators conclude preliminary inquiries linked to financial transactions during his tenure as governor.
Meanwhile, El-Rufai’s legal counsel has formally applied for his bail, arguing that the former governor is cooperating with investigators and poses no flight risk. The defence team urged the commission to respect his constitutional rights and grant him administrative bail pending the conclusion of the probe.
However, EFCC officials insist that the scale and complexity of the allegations require additional time, stressing that the investigation is ongoing and that no final decision has been reached.
The development has sparked widespread political and public reactions, as the probe comes amid shifting political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
