Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji’s overwhelming re-election did more than return an incumbent to office; it ushered Ekiti into a new political era marked by uncommon unity, stability and renewed hope. The electoral outcome was not merely a victory for one individual or one political party, it was a loud declaration by the people that continuity, competence and purposeful leadership remain the surest path to sustainable development.
This piece is written against the backdrop of the genuine expectations of well-wishers and the emotional, though not always sincere, concerns expressed from different quarters of Ekitikete. Such reactions are natural in every democratic society. Yet, beyond sentiments lies an undeniable reality: Governor Oyebanji’s second tenure possesses all the ingredients necessary to unveil a greater Ekiti.
With the unprecedented political harmony that accompanied his electoral victory, Ekiti now enjoys a rare advantage. Across political, traditional, business and professional circles, there is an emerging consensus that the development of the State should supersede personal ambitions. That unity must now translate into collective action. The task before every son and daughter of Ekiti, therefore , irrespective of previous political affiliations, is now, to contribute meaningfully to the success of this administration.
I recall a conversation during a journey to Lagos shortly after the election. A supporter of Governor Oyebanji remarked, Only the guilty are afraid of their own shadow. Whether one agrees with that statement or not, one truth remains indisputable: every election produces both winners and losers. Governor Oyebanji has emerged as the people’s choice, and in the finest tradition of democratic leadership, he has extended an olive branch to all, including those who once considered themselves opponents. The time for political contest has passed, and the season for reconciliation and development has begun. Ekiti stands to gain far more from unity than from prolonged political divisions.
Looking back at the beginning of Governor Oyebanji’s first tenure, one can appreciate the wisdom that shaped many of his early decisions. His choice of key officials, particularly the appointment of his Chief of Staff, reflected careful judgment and strategic thinking. Those decisions laid the administrative foundation upon which many of today’s achievements now stand.
Perhaps no issue generated louder public complaints at the beginning of the administration than the deplorable condition of roads across the State. While many of the affected roads were under federal jurisdiction, the Governor refused to hide behind constitutional limitations, instead, he chose collaboration over confrontation. Through his productive relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government, several critical road projects either commenced or received renewed momentum. Today, major highways that were once nightmares for motorists have become far more motorable, while landmark projects such as the Ado-Ekiti–Iyin–Itawure roads are being reconstructed with durable concrete pavement, promising longevity that matches Ekiti’s unique terrain.
Another defining feature of Governor Oyebanji’s leadership has been his determination to build upon existing strengths instead of abandoning inherited assets. The remarkable transformation of the Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort illustrates this philosophy. For decades, the enormous tourism potential of Ikogosi remained largely unrealised despite repeated efforts. Today, the story has changed significantly. What previous administrations struggled to accomplish is gradually becoming a success through the Governor’s strategic partnerships and purposeful management.
Building on that momentum, another frontier now beckons: medical tourism. The massive investment in the new 80-bed specialist hospital within the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital represents a bold step towards positioning Ekiti as a regional healthcare destination. Complementing the world-class facilities at Afe Babalola University Multi-System Hospital, these investments have the potential to attract patients from across Nigeria and beyond, while simultaneously creating employment, stimulating hospitality businesses and strengthening the State’s economy.
Equally noteworthy is the remarkable improvement in electricity supply across many parts of the State. This did not happen by accident; it resulted from deliberate policies that engaged independent power generation companies alongside mini-grid operators to provide alternative and more reliable sources of electricity. As more communities and businesses benefit from improved power supply, productivity, industrial growth and investors’ confidence are expected to rise significantly.
Agriculture remains another shining testimony of the administration’s first term. Through targeted interventions, mechanisation support, input subsidies and market access initiatives, thousands of farmers have expanded their operations, while many have achieved financial independence. In several communities, agriculture is no longer viewed as a vocation of last resort but as a profitable enterprise. The second tenure presents an even greater opportunity to deepen this transformation by attracting more young graduates into agribusiness, promoting agro-processing industries and creating sustainable value chains that will retain wealth within Ekiti.
The greatest strength of Governor Oyebanji’s second term may well be that it begins where many administrations usually end. There will be no learning curve, no prolonged transition and no distraction arising from electoral uncertainty. Instead, government can concentrate fully on executing long-term developmental programmes with greater speed, confidence and efficiency. Indeed, our Jerusalem is secured, not because every challenge has disappeared, but because the foundation has been laid, the direction is clear and the people have demonstrated their confidence in purposeful leadership. The responsibility now rests on every Ekiti son and daughter to protect that mandate, support constructive governance and work together towards building a State whose best days still lie ahead.
History rarely remembers those who merely won elections, it remembers those who used the privilege of leadership to transform the lives of their people. Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji now has the opportunity to write such a legacy. The second term is not simply another four years; it is the season in which good governance must mature into enduring greatness.
