South Africa is rethinking its close economic ties with the United States as Washington prepares to slap steep 30% tariffs on local exports.
President Cyril Ramaphosa warned that the move could cost the country 100,000 jobs and has signalled a shift towards markets in Africa and Asia. With relations between Pretoria and Washington growing tense, Ramaphosa said it’s time to diversify and reduce dependency on the US.
While talks continue, South Africa is opening its doors to new trade partners and fast-tracking the African free-trade plan. A government help desk will also support exporters as they navigate this dramatic pivot.
