The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee has issued a summons to the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, demanding his appearance on March 5, 2024, to address concerns surrounding alleged leakages within the REMITA e-payment solution platform.
Expressing frustration over Cardoso’s non-compliance in previous sittings, the committee emphasized its authority to summon any individual in Nigeria for evidence and document production. The committee warned of potential legal action, including the issuance of a warrant of arrest, should the Governor fail to appear.
In a letter signed by Committee Chairman Bamidele Salam, titled “Investigation of Revenue Leakages through REMITA Platform,” the committee granted Cardoso one final opportunity to appear and respond to the issues raised during the investigative hearing scheduled for 10 am on March 5, 2024, at the House of Representatives’ New Building.
The committee stressed the importance of Cardoso bringing along relevant officers familiar with the issues, cautioning against any attempt to send a representative. The letter referenced a prior representation made by an Assistant Director on February 27, 2024, without proper documentation, emphasizing the committee’s insistence on chief accounting officers appearing in person to defend their offices.
