Orin Ekiti farmers to get compensation.
Farmers whose farms were destroyed by cattle in Orin Ekiti recently
would soon be paid compensation by the owner herdsmen.
This was part of the resolutions reached by all parties after several
peace meetings between the people of Orin Ekiti, the leadership of the
Fulani community in the state, the security agencies and state
government, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural
Development and Anti-grazing Law Enforcement Agency.
Speaking at the meeting, the Sarkin Fulani of Ekiti state, Alhaji
Abashe Adamu described as unfortunate the disharmony the grazing on
farmlands has generated between the people of Orin Ekiti and the
Fulanis, who have been living together in peace for a very long time
in the area.
The Fulani leader assured that the compensation would be paid within 5
days to pave way for immediate release of the confiscated cows to
their owners.
Alhaji Abashe, who promised to sign an undertaking on behalf of his
people not to graze in and around the community, assured his men’s
commitment to peaceful co-existence with the host communities in the
state.
Speaking on behalf of the people of Orin Ekiti, a community leader, Mr
Michael Omotoso said that the position of his people was that cattle
would no longer be allowed to graze on their land and its environs as
a result of the series of havoc inflicted on the people and their
farms by herders and their cattle in the recent past.
Mr Omotoso affirmed his people’s preparedness to accept whatever the
herdsmen were ready to pay, stressing that the state government should
ensure that herdsmen are prevailed upon not to bring their cows for
grazing around the town.
