The management of Plateau State Specialist Hospital has issued an internal warning over an alleged plan by terrorist groups to abduct medical personnel in the state.
In a memo dated April 13, 2026, the hospital’s Chief Medical Director disclosed intelligence reports indicating that doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers may be targeted for kidnapping. The aim, according to the memo, is to compel them to treat injured insurgents.
The document noted that the strategy represents a shift in tactics by armed groups operating in frontline states, including Plateau State. By securing medical care for wounded fighters, the groups are believed to be attempting to sustain operations and reduce casualties within their ranks.
Hospital management warned that the development poses a significant threat to healthcare workers, particularly those serving in rural and high-risk areas. Staff were advised to heighten personal and workplace security awareness, remain vigilant, and promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies.
The memo also called on all health facilities across the state to sensitise employees to emerging risks while security agencies continue efforts to prevent potential attacks.
However, concerns have been raised about the level of protection at the facility. A doctor at the hospital, who spoke anonymously, confirmed the authenticity of the memo but said there has been no noticeable increase in security deployment.
According to the source, only personnel from the civil defence corps and a civilian guard are stationed at the hospital’s entrance, with no visible presence of police or military officers.
Attempts to obtain a response from the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force in the state were unsuccessful as of the time of reporting.
