In 2024, we are once again reminded that racism within American policing isn’t just present when officers unjustly draw their weapons—it’s entrenched in their political power. The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the largest and most influential police union in the country, has once again endorsed Donald Trump for president.
This is a man convicted of 34 felonies and currently facing more charges across multiple jurisdictions. What message does this send, particularly to Black Americans and other minority communities? Instead of rallying behind Kamala Harris—an accomplished prosecutor, former District Attorney, and Attorney General—whose resume should make her an obvious ally for law enforcement, the FOP has chosen to align itself with a convicted felon.
Let’s not mince words: this is a blatant, unapologetic embrace of white supremacy. Trump, who has incited violence against police officers, downplayed police brutality, and fanned the flames of racial division, somehow earns their loyalty over a highly-qualified Black woman.
This endorsement is not simply about political differences—it is an endorsement of the systemic racism that continues to define American policing. The FOP is telling minorities in America that no matter how qualified or law-abiding you are, you will always be seen as less than. This disgraceful reality is a smear on the soul of the nation. The message is clear: police unions have no interest in reform, equality, or justice. Instead, they are openly backing a man who represents everything wrong with policing in America today—brutality, impunity, and the consistent marginalization of people of color. It’s time to face this uncomfortable truth.
The FOP’s endorsement of Donald Trump over Kamala Harris tells us exactly where their values lie, and it’s a damning indictment of the institution itself.
