Barring any last minute change by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Tokunbo Abiru, will be a nominee for the position of a Minister.
Abiru, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the development, will be Minister of Finance.
Yemi Cardoso was being considered for the post, but it appears the President has now decided to tap Abiru, who played a key role in his campaign organisation, as well as doubling as key adviser to the president on finance and the economy, as his Minister of Finance.
Abiru was the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Polaris Bank Limited, from where he resigned on August 24, 2020, to contest the Lagos East Senatorial election, under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He also served as Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State between 2011 and 2013, under Babatunde Fashola’s administration.
Abiru holds a B.Sc (Economics) from Lagos State University and he is a Fellow of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), and an Honorary Senior Member of The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN).
