The Attorney General of the federation and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), today said the need for law reforms in the country cannot be over-emphasized because of its relevance to the socio-economic and political development of any nation.
The Minister for Justice said “It is uniformly agreed that law as an instrument of social engineering always served as the instrumentality of meaningful reform in any civilized society.”
He said this in his speech while inaugurating the 9th Commission of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission.
The newly inaugurated commission has a former lawmaker representing Oriade state Constituency in Osun state between 2011 and 2015, Honourable M.B.O Ibraheem as Commissioner from the south-west.
Others are Professor (Mrs) Jumai A.M Audi who will serve as Chairman, Barrister Bassey Dan-Abi as Commissioner and Dr. Muhammad M. AMINU as Secretary.
Malami urged members of the commission to weed out and replace the obsolete laws within the legal system in order to attune the applicable laws to the prevailing realities and norms in the society.
Speaking with newsmen after the inauguration, Hon M.B.O Ibraheem pledged to work harmoniously with other commissioners under the chairmanship of Professor (Mrs) Jumai A.M Audi, who he described as a worthy leader who is capable of leading the commission.
