In the aftermath of the tragic killing of 16 soldiers in Okuama, Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State, the military has intensified its efforts to apprehend the alleged militant leader responsible for the attack. Reports indicate that soldiers have tracked the militant leader to the riverine Igbomoturu community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. However, their operation met resistance from local youths, resulting in clashes and the destruction of several houses belonging to militants.
The military operation extended to the Akugbene community in Bomadi Local Government Area, where suspects were believed to have fled. The community chairman and several others were detained over allegations of harboring fugitives.
Meanwhile, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State paid a visit to the 181 Amphibious Battalion of the Nigerian military in Bomadi, amidst heavy security measures. Although the purpose of his visit was linked to the recent violence, the governor remained tight-lipped about the discussions held during the closed-door meeting with army authorities.
In response to the escalating tensions, Member of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Francis Ejiroghene Waive, representing Ughelli North, Ughelli South, and Udu Federal Constituency, called for a ceasefire and condemned the violence in Okuama community. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to identify the perpetrators and urged all parties to prioritize peace and cooperation.
Waive’s statement also underscored the importance of respecting human life and conducting investigations in accordance with legal procedures. He urged the military to exercise restraint and collaborate with relevant agencies to address the crisis and provide assistance to displaced individuals.
