In a recent statement, the presidency has confirmed that Betta Edu, the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, will not be reinstated in President Bola Tinubu’s administration. This decision follows Edu’s suspension on January 8 over allegations of a N585 million scandal, which sparked widespread public criticism. Before last Wednesday’s cabinet reshuffle, speculation had grown that Edu might make a comeback in the administration.
However, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, put these rumors to rest, stating clearly, “Betta Edu is gone.” Onanuga further confirmed that her role has now been filled by a new appointee from Plateau State.
The decision reflects a possible collaboration with Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). While the EFCC has yet to officially release findings from their investigation, Onanuga noted that President Tinubu’s decision was likely influenced by evidence that substantiated Edu’s suspension.
