The Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Funminiyi Afuye, has congratulated Sen Opeyemi Bamidele, on his appointment into the Body of Benchers in Nigeria.
A statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Speaker on Media, Akogun Tai Oguntayo, described the appointment as welcome development and a mark of recognition not only to the Senator but Ekiti State as a whole.
Senator Bamidele represents Ekiti Central in the upper chamber of the National Assembly and he is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on judiciary.
The Body of Benchers in a letter sent to the Senator, explained that Sen Bamidele’s appointment was “sequel to the resolution by the Body of Benchers that the Chairmen of the National Assembly Committees on Judiciary should be made members of the Body of Benchers by virtue of their offices”
The Speaker who is also lawyer, noted that “apart from the fact that Sen Opeyemi Bamidele is statutorily entitled to be a member of the body of Benchers as the Chairman of the Senate committee on judiciary, he is also a round peg in a round hole as a successful legal practitioner before venturing into politics”
Afuye noted that “for those who may not know the benefit Ekiti will derive from this appointment, it is the Body of Benchers that is responsible for the admission of law students into the Law School. Therefore, for Ekiti to have a representative there means our institutions of legal learning cannot be left behind in the quota system of the law school.”
Sen Opeyemi Bamidele, before his election into the Senate had been elected to the House of Representatives after he served as the Commissioner for Information in Lagos State.
