The Independent National Electoral Commission has stepped up preparations for the June 20, 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State, with a strong focus on voter education, inclusiveness and curbing misinformation.
According to a statement released on Monday, the move followed a high-level strategy meeting held by the commission, aimed at strengthening public awareness and ensuring a credible electoral process.
Speaking at the meeting, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ekiti State, Dr Bunmi Omoseyindemi, described the engagement as timely, noting that voter education would play a critical role in the success of the election.
He said, “This meeting is both timely and strategic as we intensify efforts to deepen voter awareness and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.”
Omoseyindemi equally identified key priorities to include tackling fake news, promoting peaceful participation and boosting public confidence, while urging stakeholders to support ongoing sensitisation efforts.
“Democracy can only thrive when citizens are well-informed and actively involved in the process,” he added.
The REC also stressed the need to reach rural communities, first-time voters and vulnerable groups, warning against challenges such as vote-buying, voter apathy and politically driven misinformation.
In her remarks, the Ekiti State Director of the National Orientation Agency, Mrs Oluwakemi Akomolede, reaffirmed the agency’s partnership with INEC, noting that awareness campaigns were ongoing through radio and television to encourage peaceful conduct before, during and after the poll.
