The premises of Gilbert Igweka Global Concept in Ado Ekiti has been
sealed off on the orders of an Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado
Ekiti, the State capital for failure to pay a sum of N17, 667,620
million (Seventeen Million, Six hundred and Sixty-Seven Thousand, Six
hundred and Twenty Naira) as taxes on its business premises, personal
income, PAYE of its staff and also withholding tax deducted from
contractors.
The Chairman of the State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Muyiwa
Ogunmilade who made this known in Ado Ekiti, described the development
as unfortunate but very necessary, stressing that it would serve as a
deterrent to other tax defaulters.
Mr. Ogunmilade explained that Government went through due process and
commendable restrains before sealing off the premises, adding that the
business organization was duly served with several demand notices for
the sum of N17, 667,620 million but failed to make required remittance
within the time frame of the notice.
Ogunmilade noted that the business responded by raising objections but
was unable to substantiate the grounds for its objection and it was
also unable to produce the documents that were demanded of it by EKIRS
to back up its claims nor made any payment until the period of grace
lapsed, stressing that the State had no choice but to obtain a Court
order to persuade the erring business to offset the debt.
Reiterating government’s commitment to the development of the private
sector, the Chairman, Mr Ogunmilade stressed government’s zero
tolerance for tax evasion, adding that the present administration in
the State would no longer allow both individuals and corporate
organization to evade tax.
