A shocking sex-for-marks scandal has erupted at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), as a final-year student from the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies accuses her lecturer, Dr. Anthony Agbegbedia, of sexual harassment and academic misconduct.
In a letter submitted to the university’s Vice-Chancellor, the student’s father claimed that Dr. Agbegbedia had been harassing his daughter for rejecting his advances. The student alleged that the lecturer deliberately gave her failing grades in PCS 411 during her 400-level first semester after she refused his persistent requests to meet privately.
According to the student, the harassment began as early as her 300-level and continued throughout her final year. She says she avoided multiple invitations from Dr. Agbegbedia to meet outside campus, including in Ado-Ekiti, often making excuses to evade him. She further expressed fear that she might also fail PCS 414, another course taught by Agbegbedia, due to her continued refusal to engage with him.
The student and her father formally reported the matter in letters sent to the Dean of the Faculty of Science and the Vice-Chancellor, seeking urgent intervention. The letter dated August 20, 2024, and obtained by SaharaReporters, highlighted the student’s fear of being victimized and requested an investigation.

“If I do not hear from you within two weeks, I will not hesitate to take legal action and make the evidence public,” the father warned, providing documented evidence of the harassment.
When approached for comments, Dr. Agbegbedia dismissed the accusations as a “cheap attempt to blackmail” him. He firmly denied any wrongdoing, stating, “I have never told any student that they need to have sex with me to pass. This is a clear case of blackmail.”
Agbegbedia also noted that the university has procedures in place for students who feel they have been unfairly graded, suggesting that the student could request her scripts to be reviewed by an external examiner. He maintained that all his grading was done using a standard marking guide.
Meanwhile, FUOYE’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, confirmed receipt of the petition and stated that the university has initiated an investigation. “A panel has been set up, and the matter is under investigation. Both sides will be heard, and due process will be followed.
We have handled similar cases before, and there will be no cover-ups,” Fasina assured. The Vice-Chancellor emphasized the importance of a fair and impartial investigation, adding that the university is committed to addressing the issue with the seriousness it deserves.
