
The federal government has approved the rerouting of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to pass through Ogoniland in honour of the late Senator Mpigi Barinada Barry.
According to a report by Vanguard newspaper, Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced the decision on Wednesday at a Night of Tribute held in Abuja, where he described the senator’s death as a significant loss to the nation.
Umahi praised Mpigi’s dedication to national development, highlighting his integrity and efforts at fostering unity in the Senate.

He added that the late lawmaker’s impact went beyond his constituency, citing projects linked to his efforts in Lagos, Ogun, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Kano states.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is a major federal road project designed to link coastal states from Lagos to Cross River, improving transportation, boosting trade, and opening up economic opportunities along Nigeria’s southern corridor. The project is expected to enhance connectivity between key cities and support tourism, logistics, and regional development.
Senator Mpigi Barinada Barry, who represented Rivers South-East, passed away on February 19, 2026, after a brief illness. He was a PDP lawmaker and chaired the Senate Committee on Works, known for his work on infrastructure.
