Saturday, August 15, 2020. Earlier today, the National Youth of Council of Nigeria, Somolu Branch, led by Comrade Musa Fasasi held a Walk Against Rape and Sexual Abuse in Somolu Community, to celebrate this year’s International Youth Day.
In keeping with this year’s theme (Youth Engagement for Global Actions), the programme was tagged “Say No To Rape, Drug Abuse and Say Yes To Youth Development” while the walk commenced at the Somolu Local Government Secretariat, Durosimi Street in a round-turn through different streets and was successfully put to a stop at LASPARK Garden on Ikorodu Road, Onipanu.
The avowed intents, according to Comrade Musa Fasasi, was to enlighten the general public and take firm stand against the immoral actions, at the same time educating the youth specifically on the negative effects of such abuse on victims.
Furthermore, he said the walk was aimed at encouraging victims of abuses to seek for necessary counselling.
Virtually, every persons with moral upbringing believes Rape & Sexual Abuse to be heinous crimes, which are common experiences in the lives of girls and women, as a compromise to their bodily and sexual freedom.
According to several studies, it was widely revealed that both crimes are found to be highly prevalent among youth and must be combated socially and legally, as opined by Hon. Olumide Akinola (Supervisory Councillor for Health) who also pointed out the health implications.
The programme wouldn’t have been a commendable one without the presence of all participants, as they helped with the distribution of flyers for more sensitization and nose masks in line with strict compliance to Covid-19 guidelines.
In attendance, Comrade Sulaiman Billi’aminu Oba Lekan (State Chairman, NYCN represented by the Deputy State Chairman, Oni-Orisan Mayowa), Comrade Abdul Qowiyy Busari (NANS JCC Chairman, represented by Comrade Qudus Odunewu), Abdur-Rahman Sulaiman (Ameer, MSSN Somolu), Tope Adekambi (Member, Celestian Youth), Comrade Afees Raheem (Special Adviser on Food Security), Bariga LCDA Youth Representatives, Comrade Uthman Tijani (Former SUG Financial Secretary, LASU), Comrade Lincoln Osho (Secretary, NYCN Somolu), Comrade Kayode Melbury, Comrade Kushimo Isaah and most importantly from Lagos East, Comrade Aare Abdul-Fattah Ajibola, contributed keenly towards the success of the programme.
