Ekiti State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Olawale Fapohunda will tommorow, Thursday, August 27, Chair the much anticipated session on sexual violence, including the increasing incidents of rape across Nigeria at the ongoing Annual General Conference (AGC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
The virtual session which is themed: ‘No Means No’ will start by 2:00pm on Zoom, and will specifically address issues such as the behaviours that perpetuate rape culture, reform of the law on rape, prosecution of rape, taking of evidence and the evidential burden of proof, as well as how women can be protected from sexual harassment in the workplace.
Panelists expected to give their perspectives on the topic include: Abimbola Akeredolu SAN, Partner, Banwo & Ighodalo; Evans Ufeli, MD/CEO, Wise Edge International; Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Coordinator, Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT); Sheikh Muhammad Nurudeen Lemu, Trustee, Senior Management Board of the Islamic Education Trust and Josephine Effah-Chukwuma, who is the founder of Project Alert.
Ekiti State which has been widely acknowledged for many of its interventions in the area of Gender Based Violence, was the first State in Nigeria to open a Register of Sex Offenders. Its naming and shaming of convicted sex offenders’ policy has gained national attention and its Gender Based Violence (prohibition) law has been said to be the most progressive in the country.
