In a bid to revitalize and position itself as a formidable opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to conduct a mini-convention between January and February, according to sources within the party.
The convention aims to address vacancies in the National Working Committee (NWC), a crucial step in gearing up for the 2027 elections. The NWC reshuffle becomes imperative as the party grapples with the absence of key figures, including the national chairman, a contested national secretary position, and the vacant role of National Woman Leader due to the passing of Prof. Stella Effah-Attoe.
Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, who faced suspension and legal challenges regarding his chairmanship, has been urged to withdraw his court case. The party, led by acting National Chairman Amb. Umar Damagum, has appointed Setonji Koshoedo as the acting National Secretary to address the impasse over the position.
Amidst the leadership vacuum, internal disputes over the national secretary position between Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Udeh Okoye further complicate matters. The South East Caucus, having appointed Okoye, and Anyanwu, seeking reinstatement, are now in a legal tussle. To avoid escalation, the party may opt for a neutral candidate from the South East at the convention.
While the chairmanship remains in the North Central, former Senate President Bukola Saraki and Senator Gabriel Suswam are vying for the position. Saraki’s recent engagements with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike indicate a strategic move to position himself as a unifying force for the party.
However, Suswam’s supporters insist the chairmanship should stay in Benue, Ayu’s home state, to complete his tenure. The upcoming mini-convention is crucial in determining the party’s direction after a contentious presidential primary and election loss.
Addressing the constitutional aspect of the secretary position, NWC member Timothy Osadolor emphasized that contesting an election does not necessitate resignation according to the party’s constitution. He highlighted the need for adherence to constitutional processes in resolving internal disputes, urging stakeholders to consider the broader interests of the party.
