n Islamic scholar, Abdul-Wakeel Ogungbo, urged Nigerians to seek repentance before death and make restitution for past wrongdoings.
Mr Ogungbo gave the advice at a Ramadan lecture organised by Abdul-Kabir Ogungbo, special adviser to the Lagos governor on taxation and revenue, on Sunday in Ibeju-Lekki.
The cleric, a senior lecturer at the Department of the Branch Library, Lagos State University, warned that God records every action and that individuals would be held accountable.
In his lecture titled ‘Divine Justice: Repentance, Restitution and Re-Alignment’, the cleric emphasised the importance of sincere repentance.
According to him, it is not enough to repent only when faced with difficulties.
Mr Ogungbo noted that if God would demand accountability even from animals, then human beings should be more mindful of their actions.
“Whatever you do, Allah is recording it, and you will be questioned about every single action.
“The impact and consequences of your deeds will follow you everywhere, and no wrongdoing goes unpunished except through sincere repentance.
“Practise self-restraint, remember Allah at all times, and surround yourself with friends who influence you positively and guide you in the ways of Allah,” he said.
Mr Ogungbo attributed many of Nigeria’s challenges to human actions and behaviours such as injustice, dishonesty, and other social vices.
He urged Nigerians to reflect on their conduct.
He noted that a nation’s unanswered prayers could be linked to the actions and behaviours of its citizens.
The cleric stressed the need for self-restraint, remembrance of God, and positive influences.
